<video:title><![CDATA[Elephant Seals along Highway 1]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[The Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery lets visitors observe elephant seals up close and in their element. Find these magnificent marine mammals on the beach, just off Highway 1. Located along a beautiful stretch of coastline, the rookery is easily accessible, free, and open to the public all year-round.

Like whalers, people hunted elephant seals on the Central Coast from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Using their blubber for oil nearly drove the Northern Elephant Seal to extinction. At one point, just one colony of 50 seals remained on Guadalupe Island, off the coast of Baja. With the invention of kerosene in 1846, and with Mexico’s protection of the species in 1922, Northern Elephant Seal numbers climbed. Today, scientists estimate their population to be 225,000 or more.

On land, the Northern Elephant Seal can be found between the Gulf of Alaska and Baja California. Interestingly, aside from newborns, elephant seals don’t eat or drink while ashore, and rarely breathe, to protect their energy. When they leave the rookery, these elephant seals often swim as far as 3,000 miles away, twice per year.]]></video:description>

<video:description><![CDATA[What’s orange and black and flutters all over? Western Monarch butterflies, of course! These butterflies migrate twice per year, like birds. Many other butterfly species can survive cold winters, but Monarchs can't. To stay warm enough, they winter in a favorite Monarch butterfly grove along the Highway 1 Road Trip each year between October and February.

During this time, clusters of their orange wings cover the trees in Monarch butterfly groves in Pismo Beach, Nipomo, Los Osos and Morro Bay. Researchers have counted up to 230,000 Monarch butterflies in a single season at the Pismo State Beach Butterfly Grove.

When the weather warms up for spring, the butterflies migrate north, with some traveling over 1,000 miles to reach their next migration point. Western Monarchs live west of the Rockies and migrate up and down the West Coast, between southern Canada and San Diego.]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[Family Friendly Coastal California]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[Looking for fun, fresh, family-style adventures along Coastal California? Our unique stretch of Highway 1 has you covered. From wildlife viewing and outdoor activities to comedy, castles and white sand beaches, coastal San Luis Obispo County knows how to play.

With 3,500 acres of sand to ride over, the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) provides a thrilling playground for off-road enthusiasts. This unique attraction is an Off-Highway Vehicle Area administered by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, and the only place in the state where you can partake in this style of fun. Visitors come from all over the U.S. to feel the thrill of charging and cresting sand dunes.

Looking for something more historical? Built in 1875, the Piedras Blancas Light Station protectws ships passing by San Simeon from wrecking on the rocky shoreline. The lighthouse once stood 100 feet tall thanks to the glass cupola over the Fresnel lens. That Fresnel lens is now displayed next to the Veterans Memorial hall in nearby Cambria. The historic building remains an important and fascinating site for both the connoisseur and the curious. After your lighthouse tour, explore the Boucher Trail that runs from Station to the paved elephant seal viewing parking for 1.9 miles away. It offers spectacular scenic vistas of the coastline and opportunities for wildlife viewing. The trail includes coastal bluff, grassland, and wetland areas, making it a photographer's delight.

<video:description><![CDATA[Cayucos State Beach has been named one of California’s best beaches by publications, bloggers and reviewers. Panoramic, laid-back, kid-friendly and historic, this classic stretch of shoreline represents the very best California has to offer. There are picnic tables, play equipment, restrooms and outside showers available. Dogs on-leash are also welcome from the Pier south to Chaney Avenue.

Established in 1872 by the city’s founder, Captain James Cass, the Cayucos Pier is a must see when visiting this state beach. As you stroll the pier, you can watch the surfers, look for whale spouts at the Whale Trail sign, and even fish without a license.

Ready to start packing? Cayucos beach enjoys temperate weather year-round. Highs reach the upper 60s and low 70s August through November, and fall to the mid-to low 60s December through June. Lows get into the 40s December through March, and reach the high 40s and low 50s the remainder of the year.

Cayucos State Beach is a must-see along the Highway 1 Road Trip with:
- surfing
- swimming
- windsurfing
- kite surfing
- kayaking
- paddleboarding (SUP)
- fishing
- beach volleyball
- playground
- and even an adjacent skate park]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[Surfing Cayucos Beach]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[The most popular Cayucos beach, Cayucos State Beach is a sandy beach that offers mild weather, watersports such as surfing and swimming, and tidepooling.

Cayucos beach can be found atop any list of favorite California surf spots. Conditions here include high swells (particularly November through April) and high tides. For the most consistent swells, though, hit the surf in spring or summer. Up-to-date surf reports are available at websites like surfline.com.

The water temperatures here range from a chilly 54 degrees F in spring up to around 66 degrees F in September. When temperatures hit the low end, plan ahead and bring a 4/3 mm – 5/4/3 mm thickness wetsuit with boots, gloves, and a hood. In warmer seasons, wear a spring suit or 2 mm – 3/2 mm thickness wetsuit.

Both short boards and longboards are welcome here ― the waves are open to all! Better yet, local shops rent boards, wetsuits, and other gear, along with offering lessons. These are the locals so be sure to ask for tips on the best spots. Also check these shops for a board to buy as several surfboard shapers live in the area.

Cayucos beach offers bathrooms, outdoor showers, and parking along Ocean Front Avenue.]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[Harmony Headlands State Park, Highway 1]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[Harmony Headlands State Park is a quiet coastal park that feels like a world away. To get here, look for the marked turnout along Highway 1 between Cayucos and Cambria, then walk the Harmony Headlands Trail. A scenic hike through coastal plains to the sea awaits you.

Harmony Headlands occupies 748 acres that were once part of Rancho San Geronimo, a Mexican land grant from 1842. The property later became a dairy farm that was owned and operated by the Storni family until the mid-1960s. After changing hands several times, the ranch became property of the state in 2003.

The hike out through marine terraces to the ocean spans 1.5 miles. The trail opens to wide views of the Pacific Ocean where whales, dolphins, and other sea life can be spotted. Be sure to bring your camera and binoculars so you best enjoy the vistas that include steep, rocky bluffs, crashing waves, and seabirds. Benches are situated along the coastline to provide rest and perfect places for wildlife viewing.]]></video:description>

Avila Beach takes its independent spirit seriously and considers itself to be the perfect paradise. And this isn't your typical farmers market: You can dance beneath the stars with bands of all kinds as musicians sing, strum and tap to the beat. The tunes are thumpin’, the jive is jumpin’, and the view is stunning.

<video:description><![CDATA[Highway 1 is more than just a scenic drive, so for those looking for what to do while visiting Big Sur and the surrounded areas, we recommend checking out the beaches of San Simeon. This quaint coastal town is just south of Big Sur and is home to historic Hearst Castle. Plan to spend some time exploring the shore during your visit, and that includes checking out the historic San Simeon Bay Pier.

In 1878, California State Senator George Hearst built a wharf to transport goods to and from his 40,000-acre Rancho Piedra Blanca. That wharf would later receive antiquities from all over the world to fill the spectacular home of his son, newspaperman William Randolph Hearst. The original wharf no longer remains, but a new pier was built in 1957 at W.R. Hearst Memorial State Beach as a recreational fishing pier. Set against the picturesque backdrop of San Simeon Bay, it continues to invite recreational fishing and is a great spot for family friendly outings. And no need to worry about a fishing license - anglers don't need one when fishing from a pier in California.]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[Unique Places to Visit in California]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[The Village of Arroyo Grande charms visitors with its quaint shops, unique dining options, and community events, ranking it among the best unique places to visit in California. The sweet downtown provides a change of pace from the nearby beach towns and coastal views along Highway 1. In the Village you can shop for antiques, meet the town’s roaming roosters, or walk the historic swinging bridge. And don’t miss out on tasting local wines and beer in downtown tasting rooms, and enjoy slowing down in the heart of this charming village.

Though Arroyo Grande extends further out from “the Village,” as locals call it, this downtown district represents the community's heart. Wherever you wander, this beautifully preserved Village is a destination for anyone seeking the good life.

The Swinging Bridge, the only one of its kind in California, spans 171 feet and swings 40 feet above the Arroyo Grande Creek. Built in 1875 by Newton Short, the bridge connected his property that was divided by the creek. But when Short built it, the bridge did not have sides! Those were added in 1902 and in 1911 the bridge was given to the City of Arroyo Grande. With the efforts and donations of local businesses, residents and federal funding, the bridge was reconstructed after being destroyed by a storm in 1995.

Heritage Square Park provides lawns and a generous gazebo where dance troupes and live bands perform during festivals and events. It also offers picnic facilities, restrooms, and street parking. And Centennial Park hosts the weekly farmers’ market with live music in the gazebo and is also the territory of Arroyo Grande’s famous group of roosters who roam the Village with a regal strut. (Want to spy one? Try looking along the fence that parallels the creek.)

Be sure to include the Village of Arroyo Grande in your California Road trip.]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[Highway 1 Destination Wedding: Holland Ranch Wedding]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[The Edna Valley of California is an ideal local for growing cool climate varietal wines, and it's also a beautiful locale for a destination wedding just off Highway 1. A lesser known region, Edna Valley is home to vineyards and wineries producing award-winning Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Albarino, among others. If you're looking for a vineyard wedding, consider Edna Valley a top spot as you and your guests will enjoy the solitude and scenery.

One of the top wedding locales for those familiar with the region is Holland Ranch. Nestled in the Edna Valley, the ranch is close to downtown San Luis Obispo, Avila Beach and Pismo Beach. This destination wedding spot with its scenic backdrops is a favorite of photographers. Wedding parties enjoy exclusive access to the ranch for the weekend, no rushing to accommodate other groups. Sound too good to be true? It's not and after one visit you'll see for yourself why this lesser known destination wedding spot near Highway 1 is one you and your guests will love.

<video:title><![CDATA[Things To Do in Avila Beach: Bob Jones Trail]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[Part of an in-progress trail from San Luis Obispo to the coast, the Bob Jones Trail should be included on your list of things to do in Avila Beach. This beloved section of the path extends from the Ontario Road parking lot on the north end to downtown Avila Beach at the south end. The walk is nearly 5 miles, round-trip, along a paved path. The trail skirts a tidal estuary teeming with wildlife - be sure to pause to observe what many often hurry past along the path. The trail also meanders past Woodstone Market, a deli offering breakfast, lunch, dinner and a selection of wine and beer. For a lovely outing with the family or a romantic stroll with your partner, walk part of the trail, stop for a drink on the Woodstone patio, then continue toward the coast.

The Bob Jones Trail is extremely family-friendly, and welcomes all types of travelers. Here you'll find walkers and joggers, cyclists and strollers. For walkers, it takes about 2 hours, 15 minutes to complete this out-and-back trek. The path stretches beneath a sycamore forest most of the walk, but it’s wise to bring a hat for the unshaded sections. Otherwise, sunscreen, sunglasses, water and good walking shoes are all you’ll need to enjoy the trip!

<video:title><![CDATA[Best Fishing Spots along Highway 1]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[This special stretch of Highway 1 baits anglers with 100 miles of coastline for some truly memorable saltwater fishing. But head inland and you'll find some great spots for your freshwater reel at the local lakes and reservoirs.

With all these advantages it’s no surprise that Highway 1 hosts fishing tournaments like the Central Coast Slamdown and the Estero Fishing Challenge. Both take place in different locations each year, from Spooner’s Cove in Los Osos to Leffingwell Landing in Cambria.

Be sure you know the facts before heading out on a beach fishing adventure by reviewing California Beach Fishing Guidelines and Current Regulations. Pier fishing doesn’t require a license, but other types of fishing do. If you plan to fish from a boat, make sure you know any depth restrictions, marine closures, limits on take, etc. When in doubt over whether you can fish somewhere or not, purchase a fishing license at the Department of Fish & Wildlife website. You can also buy fishing licenses in person at Virg’s Landing in Morro Bay or Patriot Sportfishing in Avila Beach. While you’re there, pick up bait, tackle, and local expertise, too.]]></video:description>

Halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Los Osos offers a haven of relaxation and beauty through its laid back atmosphere and variety of appealing natural environments. This coastal village is set on the National Morro Bay Estuary, bordered by sand dunes and rare pigmy oak trees. Los Osos is fortunate to have one of the most spectacular collections of recreational wilderness areas anywhere in California. Across the back bay inlet is Sweet Springs, a tranquil nature sanctuary. The coastal sand dunes that surround the bay lead to Montaña de Oro, considered to be one of California's most notable state parks for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, camping, and equestrian activities. The town of Los Osos itself is an antiquated refuge from the fast-paced world. There are plenty of home style restaurants to satisfy any appetite after a long day of exploring. The neighborhood of Baywood Park is the perfect place to settle down for the evening and watch the sun set into the ocean. Come visit this rare, secluded California community and you'll be grateful that you did.

<video:description><![CDATA[Today, in this Cambria Travel Guide, we're heading to the Central Coast for 10 Things to Do in Cambria, California! Cambria is located on beautiful Pacific Coast Highway 1 (between Morro Bay and San Simeon), and about halfway between LA and San Francisco.

Here are my picks for the best Cambria attractions.

2. San Simeon Beach / Kayaking 5:05
3. Hearst Castle 2:50
4. Elephant Seal Lookout 4:14
5. Hearst Ranch Winery and Sebastian's General Store 5:27

<video:title><![CDATA[Things To Do in Big Sur: San Simeon Point Trail]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[Make your day at the beach into an adventure: This perfect hike along the bluff is one of our top things to do near Big Sur. Depending on the season, as your drive along Highway 1 take you near the bluff by the ocean and rocks, you will see baby birds nested in the Eucalyptus trees and along the cliffsides. Enjoy this road trip break and continue walking to the point for a broad view of the Central Coast. This hike is family-friendly and dog friendly, though dogs must be on leashes.

A hiker’s paradise, San Simeon and Ragged Point, both just south of Big Sur, offer a wide variety of trails, terrain, and vistas. The hikes available around these neighboring towns span from casual to challenging, brief to long, sea level to thousands of feet in elevation. Like so many attractions along this stretch of Highway 1, hiking San Simeon and Ragged Point is easy with wide open, uncrowded trails. Pull off the road for a quick stroll or plan to take an entire day on one trail alone. Whichever option you choose, it’s sure to include a sweeping view of pristine coastline — the kind you can’t find anywhere else.]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[Big Sur Highway 1 Itinerary: Elephant Seals]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[The Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery is a must-top on your Big Sur itinerary. This unique destination south of Big Sur lets visitors see elephant seals up close and in their element. These magnificent marine mammals can be observed year-round on the beach, just off Highway 1. The rookery is easily accessible, free and open to the public. You'll find helpful docents available to answer your questions during peak seasons.

The Northern Elephant Seal, the largest seal in the northern hemisphere, migrates to the rookery twice a year. During their time offshore, they spend eight to ten months diving up to 5,800 feet deep for up to two hours. The rest of the year, they mate, birth, molt, and rest onshore between trips. When they leave the rookery, these elephant seals often swim as far away as 3,000 miles, twice per year.

The Piedras Blancas Rookery hosts almost 25,000 elephant seals each year, ranging from the baby elephant seal to the 5,000-pound adult male. Females weigh up to 1,800 pounds, and the seal pups are about 70 pounds at birth.

The name 'elephant seal' comes from the size of the male nose, which resembles an elephant’s trunk. This bulbous nose impresses other males who compete for female attention during mating season. It also sounds a loud call before an elephant seal fight or challenge. A male’s nose, also known as a proboscis, starts growing at about five years, and develops fully by nine years of age.]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[Highway 1 Cycling Routes along the Pacific Coastline]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[An all-time favorite cycling route, the San Luis Obispo County section of Highway 1 is a stretch representing the very best of the West Coast. The 57 miles between Ragged Point and Nipomo pass over coastal bluffs, beside mountain ranges, through beach towns, nature preserves, and vineyards. No wonder it’s become a favorite section on the Pacific Coast Route.

Through San Luis Obispo County, Highway 1 generally follows the Pacific coastline, with just a couple of brief (and totally worthwhile) exceptions. These also happen to lie along perfect backroads for making a long-distance ride. Advanced cyclists may want to clip in for one or more of the intense routes on Cycle Central Coast or want to compete in one of our many cycling events.

But you don’t have to be a pro or a die-hard cyclist to enjoy pedaling on our stretch of Highway 1. Bring your bike and ride it to the neighboring town, or to the nearest mountain bike trail — or just to the ice cream shop. Each of the destinations along our slice of Highway 1 has its own cycling routes and bike trails, from family-friendly to advanced.]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[The Best Beaches in California Offer Space to Breathe]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[The best beaches in California are along the Highway 1 Discovery Route. And here our wide open spaces allow you space to breathe.

- Estero Bluffs State Beach, Cayucos: Part of a scenic state park, this beach can be reached by hiking through grasslands along the bluffs. While several beaches skirt the trail below, the most accessible sits in a sandy cove where Villa Creek meets the sea. Here, find a great spot for tidepooling, whale and birdwatching, and beachcombing.

- Moonstone Beach, Cambria: One of the best beaches in Central California for beachcombing, Moonstone Beach encourages exploration for visitors of all ages. This beach is known for its smooth “moonstones” as well as sea glass and driftwood. Waves can be large and strong here, often unsuitable for swimming or surfing.

- Avila Beach: Pick your perfect paradise on one of the best family beaches in California! This spacious beach features soft, fine sand and gentle waves, ideal for little ones and water play. Bring your family for a walk along the pier, or hit up one of the many restaurants that line the beach.

There's plenty more to do than check out the beaches. We've got hiking, biking, whale and bird watching, farmers markets, wineries and more.

Panoramic, laid-back, kid-friendly and historic, this classic stretch of shoreline represents the very best California has to offer. <video:description><![CDATA[Plentiful waters lure anglers of all sorts here on our special stretch of Highway 1. Find yourself on an uncrowded white sand beach, surf fishing any one of our 100 miles of coastline. Get out at high tide in the morning or at dusk for a peaceful and successful fishing excursion, or at low tide for rockfishing, specifically. Go off the deep end by pier fishing at one of several historic piers, no license required. This can make for an easy breezy family fishing day, or a break from playing on the beach.

For freshwater fishing opportunities, look no further than the many lakes and reservoirs across Highway 1. Your new favorite spots are likely to be Lopez Lake and Oso Flaco Lake to the south end, and Whale Rock Reservoir to the north. And for those who like to get off the beaten path, Santa Margarita Lake offers freshwater fishing as well.]]></video:description>

<video:description><![CDATA[Travel along the stretch of Highway 1 between Ragged Point and Nipomo looking for places to visit and you'll find that this area owes much of its magic to remarkably authentic farm-to-table abundance. In this special area of the California coastline, restaurants source seafood caught within just a mile or so, straight-from-the-earth produce, responsibly raised meats and poultry, cheeses and locally grown grains. Wines from Cambria, as well as the Edna, Avila, and Arroyo Grande Valleys showcase cool, coastal growing conditions and small-lot winemaking. Every day of the week you'll find farmers markets offering fresh fruits, vegetables and proteins, plus rustic breads, cheeses, desserts, flowers, and often entertainment. The flavor extends to dockside fisheries, backroad farmstands, U-pick farms, tours of farms and wineries, and eateries dedicated to showcasing local and seasonal ingredients.

<video:description><![CDATA[Known as one of Cambria’s best beaches, Moonstone Beach is an ethereal outpost where waves meet a shoreline that's made for beachcombing. The name Moonstone was given by the settlers of Cambria because of the smooth jade and jasper stones that are soft underfoot, and which wow visitors with their intricate patterns. Bring the whole family, a picnic, a blanket, and your sense of adventure to soak in a relaxing day or take a break from your Highway 1 road trip.

The Moonstone Beach Boardwalk, which is wheelchair accessible, offers a stunning 2 mile out and back path along the coastline that showcases stunning views. You'll encounter many locals out for their daily stroll with their four-legged friends, who are also welcome when on a leash. On the north end of the boardwalk are some of the best tide pools on the Central Coast. Look closely and you'll see crabs, sea anemones, urchin, sea slugs and more.

Popular spots nearby include Shamel Park with a fabulous playground, seasonal heated swimming pool, playings fields and more; or check out Leffingwell Landing State Park whose rocky shore is perfect for whale watching or launching a kayak for a day on the water.]]></video:description>

<video:description><![CDATA[With 100 miles of Pacific coastline, this central California stretch of Highway 1 showcases spectacular sea life including marine mammals, tide pools, and kelp forests. Make a stop in Cayucos and get to know the tide pools, where sea stars, urchins, mussels, crabs and other tiny critters make their home.

Kids of all ages will marvel at the tide pools and sea life in Cayucos. For the best viewing, follow some basic guidelines that will keep our critters safe for generations to come. View our Wildlife Viewing Tips for best practices on when and how to see sea life in Cayucos and elsewhere. For example, check the timing of the tides as low tide provides the best access for tide pool viewing. And always remember: as tempting as it is to touch tide pool inhabitants, doing so is illegal. Teach little ones especially to enjoy tide pools with their eyes, only.

<video:title><![CDATA[Things To Do in Avila Beach: Avila Beach Golf Resort]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[A championship seaside golf course with stunning views, the Avila Beach Golf Resort is a must for things to do in Avila Beach. The course is conveniently located in Avila Beach, beautifully situated between a vibrant estuary and the ocean. Though it’s known for its challenging 18-hole course, Avila Beach Golf Resort also serves as an elegant, multi-use event space.

Opened in 1969, the course was designed by PGA pro Olin Dutra and British course architect, Desmond Muirhead. The 71-par championship course features 6,500 yards on kikuyu grass fairways and bentgrass greens. Set on hilly terrain in an oak-lined valley, the front nine boasts small, smooth greens and the back nine crosses a peaceful estuary with plenty of forced carries over water and greens of mixed levels.

Much more than just an 18-hole course, the Avila Beach Golf Resort offers practice facilities including a driving range with grass teeing areas. Golfers can also practice chipping, putting and pitching on the resort’s two-tier putting green, framed by a scenic view of the ocean.

Avila Beach Golf Resort also has a pro shop and offers private lessons. Hungry after a challenging round? On-site restaurant Mulligan's Bar & Grill serves breakfast and lunch, plus there's a daily happy hour.

Other nearby courses include Monarch Dunes, Blacklake, Cypress Ridge and Sea Pines. These courses add up to a memorable golf getaway.]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[What To Do in Avila Beach: Paddle Boarding]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[If you can't decide what to do in Avila Beach then we high recommend paddle boarding. Nothing compares to experiencing California’s Central Coast from the ocean. A stand-up paddleboard (SUP) offers unique views of green rolling hills and the quaint seaside town, always a wow factor. Bring your own board or rent from one of Avila Beach’s trusted outfitters. Even better? Sign up for a guided tour, and experience the hidden spots only locals usually get to see.

Avila Beach sits on a protected cove that boasts slightly warmer temperatures and calmer conditions than nearby beaches. More often than not, launching in Avila Beach means sunshine, glassy waters, and a clear view stretching from Point Sal to Point San Luis.

There are two great treks to consider for your SUP exploration of Avila Beach:
- Three piers: Start at Harford Pier's launch access and make your way around to the Cal Poly Pier, which is twice as long as the others, and continue on to the Avila Beach Pier.
- Mallagh Landing aka Pirate's Cove: This secluded inlet boasts crystaline waters and rugged cliffs. Launch from Avila Beach or Olde Port Beach, and paddle just past Fossil Point. Watch the shore for a beautiful tucked-away beach, but take care: clothing is optional on this stretch of shoreline!]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[Things To Do in California: Avila Valley Barn]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[Add the Avila Valley Barn along the California Central Coast to your list of things to do during your visit. This thriving business began as a roadside table selling fruit in 1985 and has grown into a sprawling barn that sells fresh produce, pies, preserves, snacks, ice cream, fudge, and old-fashioned candies. Depending on the season you'll find See Canyon apples, peaches, raspberries, blackberries, olallieberries, and apricots. And the barn offers tractor rides out to the adjacent fields for U-pick pumpkins, tree fruit, and berries during certain times of the year. There's also a petting zoo to keep the littlest ones (or biggest!) entertained.

Nearby stops add to your itinerary include:
- Gopher Glen: Tucked back into See Canyon and started decades ago as a hobby for a local orthodontist who loved apple trees. He grafted his own unique apple varieties, including one called Heaven Sent. Dr. DeVincenzo, or Dr. D as he was always known, was also the founder of the Avila Valley Barn. When he died, a longtime employee purchased both properties and today, each has its own unique personality. Gopher Glen focuses primarily on apples, growing 65 varieties at a time, and they continue the tradition of developing several of their own crosses each year.

- Tiber Canyon Ranch: Tucked back into a small canyon in Edna Valley, Tiber Canyon Ranch grows Tuscan olive varieties for olive oil. The ranch contributed dried apricots and plums to be shipped overseas to Allied troops during World War I. Today, the property comprises 50 acres of olive trees, — all of Italian stock. The mild coastal climate agrees with these trees and produces some of the finest olive oils available in California. Tiber Canyon Ranch oils are certified each year by the California Olive Oil Council.]]></video:description>

<video:description><![CDATA[If you're looking for the best hiking trails on Highway 1, we've got them waiting for you along the Highway 1 Road Trip. Getting in touch with nature is the best way to showcase the diversity of this abundant place. From Ragged Point to Nipomo, each destination in coastal San Luis Obispo County has its own distinctive views, along with flora, fauna, and history that you're sure to remember.

As visitors along Highway 1 you'll have your choice of tucked-away mountain trails, walking along rugged coastline and taking in expansive wine country views. Some hikes pass beside quaint cafes and historic sites while others feel as remote as a world away. Others come with a soundtrack of crashing waves, or with the hum of bees and singing crickets. Whatever your mood, the Highway 1 Road Trip has a hike to suit it.

Whether you're a novice or an experienced hiker, be sure to bring plenty of water, a hat, sunscreen, ID, keys, your mobile phone, and a friend. Many trails allow four-legged friends on a leash and some are equestrian friendly. Also bring cash (some trails charge a small fee) and be sure to remove all valuables from your vehicle at trailheads.]]></video:description>

<video:description><![CDATA[With its long stretches of white sand, boardwalks, pet-friendly spots, wildlife and bustling harbor, Avila Beach has attracted visitors for centuries.

Avila Beach takes its independent spirit seriously and considers itself to be the perfect paradise. Situated near the ocean, the hills, and wine estates, the walkable boardwalk and promenade along the coastline is host to galleries and boutiques to suit most any aesthetic whim. This stretch is the ideal spot to gather with friends for lunch or cocktails to people watch and take in the waves. It's also home to a seasonal fish and farmers market that runs from April through September on Fridays, from 4-8pm. And this isn't your typical farmers market: You can dance beneath the stars with bands of all kinds as musicians sing, strum and tap to the beat. The tunes are thumpin’, the jive is jumpin’, and the view is stunning.

It’s hard to imagine that there’s so much to do and see in one place like Avila Beach, and we haven’t even discussed the surfing, kayaking, paddleboarding or fishing off the pier. Spend a few days here, and you’ll depart smitten with your surroundings and seduced by the sea air. Avila Beach is a place where you can pick your perfect paradise.]]></video:description>

<video:title><![CDATA[What To Do in Avila Beach: Wine Tasting]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[Emerging as a top-tier wine region on the world stage, California’s Central Coast boasts rolling vineyards and views like those of Tuscany. When you're trying to decide that to do in Avila Beach, sip, swirl and savor award-winning wines beneath a warm sun, just a block from the ocean. For visitors seeking the extraordinary, wine tasting in Avila Beach and nearby cities on Highway 1 does not disappoint.

Along this stretch of Highway 1, you'll discover the influence of the Pacific Ocean on growing conditions. You can also opt to find a Central Coast food and wine festival or follow a Central Coast wine map to hunt down your next favorite bottle. The options for indulgence here are nearly as abundant as the vineyards themselves, but the vibe is never fussy. In a tasting room, like the one at Sinor-LaVallee, you’re just as likely to see tee shirts and flip flops as you are boots and belt buckles.

Sinor-LaVallee was founded in 1997 by Mike Sinor (self-avowed “Pinot Guy”) and Cheri La Vallee-Sinor. Their wines are produced from the grapes of their estate vineyard near Avila Beach. <video:description><![CDATA[Explore the small town of Nipomo with a trip to the historical Dana Adobe, named after Captain William Dana who settled here in 1828. This humble structure was home to Dana and his family, including 16 children, and was also an important stop along the mail route between San Francisco and Los Angeles in the 1850s.

Throughout the month of October, the Dana Adobe puts on its Ghost Stories: A telling of the Bloody 50’s Bandits. Enter 1850s San Luis Obispo County, a decade notorious for crime and lawlessness. The 40-minute presentation brings to life the adobe’s infamous bandit raid, and invites visitors into the action. Space is limited and advance tickets are a must. And don’t miss ghost stories around the cozy campfire at the Visitor Center before the show.

Also in October, the Dana Adobe hosts a production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, with audience participation not only encouraged, but expected! A joint project with the Studio of Performing Arts in Grover Beach, this freaky fun-fest is an annual tradition. (Due to explicit material, this show is open only to adults 18 and older.)

This stunning state park is defined by its rugged cliffs, quiet sandy beaches, coastal plains, streams, canyons, and hills, with spectacular scenery produced through millions of years of volcanic activity, plate tectonics and erosion. Montaña de Oro is perfect for backpackers, mountain biking and horseback riding.

Nearby, the peaceful area of the Morro Bay Estuary that fronts Los Osos-Baywood Park offers ideal kayaking conditions. Home to 250 species of birds and a favorite destination for avid birders, the back bay offers quiet waters and swoon-worthy sunsets. Many local companies offer equipment rental and tours to make your trip a little easier.

Looking for a unique hike? Walk among itty-bitty beauties at the Elfin Forest: this pygmy oak forest features trees stunted by natural causes to heights between just four and twenty feet. A one-mile boardwalk leads visitors between the oaks and includes multiple trailheads, and provides clearance for panoramic views of the Morro Bay Estuary and nearby mountains, as well as lookout points with prime vistas for viewing wildlife.

A one-mile boardwalk leads visitors between the oaks and includes multiple trailheads, and provides clearance for panoramic views of the Morro Bay Estuary and nearby mountains, as well as lookout points with prime vistas for viewing wildlife.

<video:title><![CDATA[What To Do near Big Sur: Sebastian's, San Simeon]]></video:title>
<video:description><![CDATA[If you're traveling along scenic Highway 1 in search of what to do near Big Sur, check out Sebastian's General Store for a dose of history and a seriously good burger.

Built in 1852 at the peak of the whaling industry, the Sebastian brothers provided goods and services to whalers, fishermen, miners, and neighboring ranches. For many years, Sebastian Brothers General Merchandise in San Simeon Bay was the significant shipping point for barrels of whale oil, cheese, butter and other commodities on the Central Coast. At that time, Old San Simeon Village was flourishing with two hotels, saloons, a blacksmith, a livery stable, a butcher, schools, a depot for stage travel to Cambria and a telegraph line to San Luis Obispo.

In 1878, the Bay View Hotel was built; a first-class hotel whose famous guests included Thomas A. Edison, Winston Churchill and Calvin Coolidge, to name a few. Some remnants of the village are still visible today but by 1910 most of the village had faded away. Sebastian’s General Store survived and is still flourishing. Sebastian’s was also home to the first post office in San Simeon until 1905 when it was moved to the pier. It was moved back in 1945, where it remains today.
