Casa Cayucos
Description
Cayucos has held onto its character in a way few California beach towns have. The Chumash word for “canoe” gave the town its name, and the Western influence still shows in the storefronts along Ocean Avenue, where antique shops, casual eateries, and family-run businesses sit within a few walkable blocks of a historic wooden pier. Open ranchland climbs into oak-crested hills just behind town, so cattle and coastline share the same frame. Locals call it the last of the old California beach towns, and it earns the title every day of the week.
Location
Cayucos sits on California’s Central Coast roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, minutes north of Morro Bay along Highway 1. This home occupies the grounds of the historic Sea Gull Motel, a couple of blocks from the heart of downtown and a short walk to the beach, the pier, coffee shops, and restaurants. The Cayucos Pier doubles as a designated Whale Trail viewpoint, and rafts of sea otters, harbor seals, and dolphins are regular sights in the protected waters offshore. At low tide, the rocky intertidal zones fill with sea stars, urchins, and anemones, while Estero Bluffs State Park to the north offers bluff-edge trails and, on clear days, views stretching from Pismo Beach toward Big Sur. Layout
This restored 1,800 square foot home has three bedrooms and two baths and accommodates up to 8 adults, or 9 with a child under 3. The primary bedroom holds a king bed and can be entered from either the hallway or the kitchen, the second bedroom has a queen bed, and the third bedroom sleeps three in a twin bed plus a twin trundle. A twin daybed in the dining area adds a flexible spot for sleeping, reading, or an afternoon nap. Both full baths sit off the central hallway, one with a tub and shower combination and one with a step-in shower. Casa Cayucos shares the Sea Gull grounds with two additional one bedroom rentals, the Sea Gull Queen Suite and the Sea Gull Bunk Suite, and all three can be reserved together to accommodate up to 18 guests with children. The open floor plan and 1930s Mission and Santa Barbara style detailing give the whole home a distinctly Californian feel, with peekaboo ocean views from the living and dining areas.
